A three-day menu that really feeds four
This practical three-day menu covers breakfast, lunch and dinner for four people each day: 9 dishes and 36 individual meal portions. It uses frozen vegetables, dry lentils, canned beans and inexpensive staples, with a single consolidated grocery basket. It is not another list of five dinners: the key question is how to feed a family across the whole day and use the same purchased packs without waste. Portions are examples for a mixed household, not personalised energy prescriptions; children and very active adults may need smaller or larger helpings. The dishes include dairy, eggs, wheat and peanuts, so substitute as necessary for allergies.

Record your own till receipt and adjust the cost before calling this a firm budget.

Make the basket work without food waste
An example of leftovers is 280 g unused dry rice (1,000 − 620), 280 g oats (1,000 − 720), 480 g dry lentils (1,000 − 520), two eggs, about 150 g frozen peas and 300 g frozen mixed vegetables. Bread, cabbage, potatoes and onions also have small remaining amounts. Milk is purchased as 3 litres and 2.4 litres are used. Any excess can be carried to the next week; do not invent a price rebate for it.
Portion math, nutrition and prices
For a transparent serving figure, the full basket cost / 36 eating occasions is €1.26 per person per meal. This is only an allocation of total shopping cost, not the precise ingredient cost of any specific breakfast or dinner; some purchased food remains. Individual dish calories, protein and fibre vary considerably by brand, cooked yield and eater. We do not present invented precise daily macronutrient totals; use packaging and a verified food database when calculating individual needs.
Food safety and leftovers
Cook dried rice for immediate service where practical. If you intentionally save cooked rice, cool it promptly (ideally within one hour), refrigerate and eat within 24 hours following the UK Food Standards Agency guidance, or freeze promptly; reheat once until steaming hot. Do not leave cooked rice at room temperature overnight. Chill other cooked leftovers within two hours, keep refrigerated at 4°C or colder and use within 3–4 days under USDA guidance, or freeze earlier. These are jurisdiction-dependent references, not a substitute for local food-safety rules. Reheat leftovers thoroughly; eggs must be cooked through.
How to adjust the plan
For a smaller household, halve cooked portions but check package purchase costs again; prices do not necessarily scale. For a higher-protein version add yogurt, fish or tofu and update the shopping basket and allergens. For a vegan option use an unsweetened fortified plant drink, omit eggs and replace peanut butter only if needed; the new menu requires fresh nutritional calculations.
